How to use "George’s Georgian Bay":
Author George Czerny wrote about his travels around Georgian Bay as well
as some special reports about bicycling on the Georgian Trail near Collingwood
and canoeing at McCrae Lake north of Honey Harbour, Ontario.
George also created sections he calls "Snapshots" for most of the municipalities
around Georgian Bay. The "Snapshots" provide information under a number of
headings, as follows:
Main roads in and out: Just to help you as you consider your way
on an Ontario map, or using the map that is on the cover of "George’s
Georgian Bay".
Hospital: Location and telephone number. Handy to have and this
could save you time in an emergency.
After-hours medical clinic: Handy to know and this too could save
you time in an emergency.
Ambulance: Police: Fire: We hope that you never need these numbers,
but they are handy to have.
Car trouble, call: Information at your fingertips just in case the
unthinkable happens to your vehicle.
Fuel Availability: Sometimes it is miles and miles ( or kilometres
and kilometres) before you come to a gasoline station. It is worth noting
that not every station sells diesel fuel. General rule when travelling around
Georgian Bay, especially in the winter, if your fuel guage is showing between
one-half and one-quarter, it is time to fill the tank.
Shopping/Services: From little general stores at crossroads in the
country, to full-fledged shopping malls in larger centres, we offer some
comments about shopping and services and provide contacts if you need to
know more.
Motels/Hotels/ Bed & Breakfasts: From small motels and hotels,
to large resorts and bed-and-breakfast lodgings, there is abundant accommodation
for visitors to the Georgian Bay area. These accommodation offerings come
at various price levels to suit various budgets.
Restaurants: From roadside "chip wagons" to fine-dining restaurants,
you can please your palate all around Georgian Bay. Do not be surprised to
find excellent restaurants in your travels around Georgian Bay. In many cases,
excellent chefs "escaped the Big City" to establish themselves and their
culinary talents in smaller centres where they not only enjoy their work,
but also the lifestyle.
Chamber of Commerce offices: Usually the best source of information
about their respective communities. George provides their addresses, telephone
numbers, websites and contact names, as possible. Their services can help
you to plan your trip ahead of time.
Regional tourism offices: The regional offices ( and sometimes Welcome
Centres) usually work together with the chamber of commerce offices and are
also an excellent source of information about specific districts of Georgian
Bay. George provides contact information and save you time searching.
Downtown promotions offices: Want to know more about shopping and
services in a downtown area? George provides contact names, telephone numbers
and e-mail addresses for Business Improvement Area (BIA) managers, as possible.
Some downtown promotion offices handle special events which readers might
enjoy.
Local radio stations: Local radio stations can provide you up-to-date
information about weather and road conditions. They can also advise you about
local events that are likely not advertised anywhere else but in a specific,
local area.
Local television stations: Local television stations can alert you
to what is happening locally and regionally. Tune in to the weather channel
anywhere and you will find it helpful.
Local newspapers: Usually an excellent source of information about
local matters and upcoming local events. Also, many local newspapers carry
advertising about such things as auction sales and yard sales, which can
be of interest to travellers.
Claims to fame: As possible, George provides information about attractions
around Georgian Bay, some may be well publicized and some you will find out
about in "George’s Georgian Bay".
Worthwhile sidetrips: Sometimes it is worth travelling off the main
road, or a little further afield. George makes suggestions about things you
can see, or places to which you can go, that are not far from the main roads
around Georgian Bay.
NOTE: When telephone numbers are provided in George’s Georgian
Bay, the first three digits represent the area code. In some cases, local-calling
will apply and you will not need the area-code digits.
